How the Top 100 Hospitals Engage in Social Media (Infographic)

In a recent study done with the International Council for Quality Care, we took a look at how the top hospitals in the nation are engaging in social media. It came as no surprise that 83% of those hospitals actively engage in either Facebook, Twitter and YouTube (so far there has been little engagement in Google+). Take a look at the infographic for a breakdown.

Hospitals in Social Media

Does your hospital or personal physician engage in social media? If they don’t, do you wish they would? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments!

The reason there could be a lack of response on social channels is because hospitals need to ensure patient confidentiality (HIPAA) is not violated. By responding to certain posts, a hospital could be revealing too much info regarding its connection with a particular patient. All private information.

    Hi Keith,

Enjoyed the infographic. I manage social media for Children’s of Alabama. We’re often overlooked in these lists and articles because we don’t have “medical” or “hospital” in our name. We’re Alabama’s only freestanding Children’s Hospital. We are very active on social media and currently have 26,320 follwers/fans on Facebook. I just wanted to put our name in the hat for consideration when looking at hospitals with the highest number of followers, etc. Thanks.

Thank you for connecting, Amy!  I can see that you’ve done a really great job creating an online “community” using social media.  I’d love to get in touch with you about doing an interview with you here at the blog.
Shoot me an email.  Thanks for the comment!

Good point, Allison.  However, there is a certain level of engagement that is permitted and would not violate confidentiality.  If the goal is to create a social media community, it’s important to have someone who can devote a good portion of time to it.  This can help avoid things from getting too crazy on places like Facebook.

    Hi Keith,

I love your infographic! I help manage social media for Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford. Like Amy said about Children’s of Alabama, we too are often overlooked! Maybe someone will make a Children’s Hospital inforgraphic soon!
